What advice would you give your younger self or students/early careerists coming into health care?
Early in life my mother would say, “Love what you do; Do what you love”. I love people and helping others. In looking at my career journey from start to date, I established and maintained many meaningful relationships of which have been beneficial throughout my career. Relationships have been key in my growth and development and my ability to mentor, grow and develop others.
Racial inequality is expressed in all dimensions of life. It is clear America has had enough and silence is complicit. Where do you see your organization going from here?
As a result of the disproportionate black and brown mortality of the COVID-19 pandemic and social injustices across the country, Northwell has publicly taken the position that “Racism is a public health crisis” and that Black Lives Matter. We stand against racism and injustice, which are a key factor in the social determinants that impact the health and economic conditions of many black and brown communities. Northwell has developed a strategic focus on the development of community partnerships that will address the factors that contribute to the health inequities, economic conditions and health outcomes in the communities we serve. In addition, we are working strategically with our Faith Based organizations to build trusting relationships with our communities. As the VP of Strategic Community Partnerships and a member of the Clergy, I can honestly say “I love what I do”, despite the challenges we face to improve access to care and the elimination of racism.
What do you like to do for fun?
I love photography, jazz and traveling. My camera is usually in hand for fun and my ministry. Prior to the pandemic, I would incorporate jazz festivals around the world into my travel plans…along with my camera!
